About the Property
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY
The home was built in 1885 for Amos and Harvey Gable, who were native to Iowa. Amos arrived in California in 1853, a farmer's son, he saw potential in this Northern California Community of Yolo County. Harvey arrived shortly thereafter. Home to major fruit, wine, and nut industries, Yolo is at the heart of the farm-to-table movement and is the epicenter of a Renaissance for high-end country experiences. This is only the third time the mansion has come on the market in its long history.
The mansion was built by A. Jackson Gilbert & E. Carlton Gilbert, a father/son team of carpenters turned contractors and finally earned title of Architects. At the time the home was built, it was one of the most expensive homes constructed in California at a cost of over $20,000. The Gilbert’s felt free to blend several different styles of architecture, producing a dwelling pleasing to the eye and grandness to the feel. The massing of the building and the heavy brackets below the roof line suggest the Italian Villa style, first popular in California in the 1860’s, while the strong verticality of the trim elements suggests the Stick style, developed in San Francisco Row houses of the 1870’s. A bit of Gothic Revival style may be seen in the steep pitch of the front gable and the window hood immediately below it. An Eastlake design is found on the front door. While all these styles are subsets of the Victorian, it is rare to see them commingled so exuberantly. The Gable Mansion is an outstanding example of 19th Century Victorian Architecture, one of the last of its style, size, and proportion in California.
